Please take a brief moment and join me in the Friday Dance, won’t you?
Thank you and sweet moves, if I do say so myself.
Since my brain is generally pretty fried by the end of the week, I feel like the best way to communicate with you all is through a few bullet points, or a list if you will. Simple and to the point is best when one’s brain becomes mush, wouldn’t you agree? I hoped that you would.
1. I got my January Birchbox and once again I am more than pleased with the contents. I told you before how I’m a big beauty junky, and nothing puts a smile on my face like a fancy new face cream or a new nail polish to add into the repertoire. And it must have been my lucky month, because wouldn’t you know I got both those things.
I could have done without the Lara bar (not that I don’t like them, but it was kind of random). The rest, though, was a slam dunk. Befine face and neck cream, VMV Hypoallergenics Eye Serum, Juicy Couture perfume and Zoya Nail Polish (in Megan) were all packed neatly inside the little brown box. So far, I have to say I am loving the eye serum and thankfully that little bottle holds a lot! My frugal doses will surely last me at least 2-3 months before I decide I need to buy a full-sized bottle. And the nail polish is so pretty, I slathered it on almost immediately.
To be honest, I was debating whether signing up for this was the smartest idea, but for $10/month, I don’t think I’m going to be pulling the plug anytime soon. I might need you to check in with me every few weeks to make sure I’m not hoarding boxes of half-used samples to the point where I can’t even open my closet anymore, though. You think I’m joking. (Let me know if you want more info on it, I’m still a new customer, but I get referral points or some jazz if you sign up through me. Holler at your hookup.)
2. You guys know I love to try new recipes. I also love recreating meals that I’ve had, in hopes that I will take one bite and be whisked back in time to that magical moment I savored whatever flavor it was that had me so smitten. The most recent experiment was to recreate a gnocchi poutine I had once in Chicago. It was the only thing that was good about that trip. I don’t hold Chicago responsible (Amy & Megan, I officially put you in charge of my re-do trip!), it wasn’t the city’s fault. (That’s a story I’m saving for when I write my memoir. Or if you get me drunk enough.) I was also bummed that not one time did I run into Common or Oprah, but whatever. Back to the gnocchi. It was pretty much the most wonderful thing I’ve ever tasted. So I found a recipe recently (here) and made it. Slaved over it. See those bread sticks? I even made those from scratch.
The problem, as it turns out, was that it was all terrible. Like inedible. In defense of the bread sticks, it was my first go round with a bread maker of which the instruction manual was lost, but the gnocchi…. oh the gnocchi! Somewhere, something went terribly wrong and the sauce was so salty I could barely get it down. The gnocchi was not homemade and got really tough when I sautéed it. Basically, it was the worst meal I’ve ever made. I pouted about it all night and even a little the next day. Hours of my life wasted, and for what?! The bitter and extremely salty taste of disappointment, that’s what. I suppose they can’t all be winners.
Sigh.
Clearly I’m not 100% over it.
3. I debuted some fancy new footwear this week:
I want to sleep in them. I know they’re probably not everyone’s taste, but they’re mine and I am obsessed with them. I’ve even realized that the majority of my closet is filled with teals and purples, just begging me to put them together as an excuse to wear these ‘beauts. I wore them twice this week already, and while I fear too much of a good thing will ruin them, I don’t care. The best part is that the heel is only like 2″ so I’m even a normal sized person in them! Heels where I don’t tower over people like an ominous beast come few and far between, which is even more reason to love them. Consider yourselves warned, friends and family. I’m about to get all Tobias Funke on these shoes and never take them off. Ever.
So that’s all I got for you today, people. I’ve got a nice long weekend to relax and get some much-needed cleaning and organizing done around the SSH house. In reality I’ll probably get caught up on all the new/returning shows, but cleaning sounds better so let’s go with that. Toodles!
