Be About It

Greetings from my couch, friends! Y’all I’ve been on “vacation” for 6 days now, and I’m sort of concerned that my head might explode tomorrow morning when my alarm goes off at 6:30am. I should maybe sleep with a shower cap on.

With these few days off I’ve had some time to think about the new year coming up and where I see things going. I’m not one to make resolutions, partially because I like to pretend I’m too cool to participate in popular activities, but mostly because I try to set realistic goals for myself throughout the year instead. Would I like to lose a few inches around my waist and have a perfect bounce-a-quarter-off-it butt in 2012? Well sure I would. But I also had the same goal in 2011 and 2010 (except maybe slightly more drastic back then) and I will probably have that same goal well into 2030 when we can fly. Oh, I’m sorry, do you not think technology in 18 years will allow us to fly? Ok…

So instead of lofty goals of which I am sure to let myself down, I’m making one solid goal of being  more positive and being more of an “action” person going forward.  (Wait…was that 2 goals?  Whatever.)  Not starting in 4 days, but starting now.  I talk a lot about things I’d like to do, ways I’d like to “be” and I spend more time thinking and talking about it than just doing it.  For example, I’ve been complaining about wasting money on things I just don’t need.  So yesterday, I made some cut backs on things like Netflix (still keeping the live streaming, I’m not a total masochist) and my beloved Sirius radio.  Sure I’ll miss the bright red envelope in the mail box, like a shiny beacon of entertainment midst a jumbled mess of junk mail and bills. And my morning commute will never be the same without the hi jinks of the Howard Stern staff to make me giggle (or cringe).  But both of these things aren’t really being taken advantage of to justify the cost (I maybe get to hear 30 minutes of the Stern show everyday)  I’ve also been really good about not going crazy and being careless with my grocery shopping, and I’ve cut way back on my trips to T.J. Maxx and online purchases.  Except for the Anthro Black Friday sale and these shoes which Brandon hates, but player please, let’s leave the fashion statements up to me, shall we?

As far as other areas of my life, I’m going to keep pursuing more freelance work because while clearly the extra loot is nice, let’s face it, I love writing, it’s my passion.  I also plan to write a book some day (what?! A blogger who wants to write a book?) and I’m going to stop daydreaming and start writing things down and taking some steps towards making that actually happen.  As far as this little blog here, I would say expect more of the same, but who knows.  I didn’t really know what this thing was going to look like when I started it almost a year ago, and in that time it turned from a fun hobby to something that has become a huge part of me and my daily life.  Oh man, I’m getting sappy here… but seriously.  You guys  are just the best.  The friends I’ve made in the short time I’ve been doing this have made every second of staring at a blank screen and wondering what the sh*t I’m even doing, every embarrassing restaurant photo and every single failed recipe worth it, times a million.

So  basically my motto for 2012: Don’t talk about it, be about it.

Now if you’ll excuse me I need to pick up a few things at T.J. Maxx.  What, it was just Christmas…

Any goals for 2012 you’d like to share?

Short & Sweet

Oh hey again.  I know right, 2 posts in one day, kind of impressive…

But I merely just wanted to let you all know something, as I said, short and sweet, and by sweet I of course mean…
(drum roll please)

The return of the Blogger Sweet Swap!

This time the theme is Fall Faves!  You’ll get paired up with another blogger (readers can play too!) and send them your favorite fall-themed treat, whatever it may be.  (I’ve heard some rumblings of pumpkin around the blogosphere lately…) Either way, do whatever you have to do to make your house smell like a Yankee Candle,  and join in the fun!

If you sat on the benches last time and drooled from afar, now is your chance to participate.   No one is expecting Top Chef Desserts here, people, just have fun and connect with some of the other fabulous bloggers out there!  Oh and get some delicious sugary treats, obviously…

All you have to do is email me (ssh.jessica@gmail.com) or Amy, my lovely partner in crime (secondcityrandomness@gmail.com) by October 4th, and we’ll get you signed up and paired off by October 6th.   Be sure to include your mailing address and if you have any dislikes or allergies!
We’re asking that all baked goods be mailed no later than Monday, October 17th, (so please be sure this is not a conflict for  you!)

Rules:

1. Each participant should send approximately a dozen of whatever treat they choose to make. (12 cookies, brownie pan to serve 12, etc). Of course, you are allowed to send more, but please keep the minimal to 12.

2. Pairs will be finalized and notified by October 6th and the delicious treats should be shipped by October 17th. We just ask that you be respectful of others and try to get them out before, or as close to that date as possible.

3. Tell Amy & Jess how much you love them for organizing this fantastic operation. (this one is optional…)

*Disclaimer- the organizers of this bake swap are merely responsible for matching the participants, and are not responsible for the items shipped.

Let the Games Begin

Oh hey.

Have you heard?  My favorite season is here.  NBD.

It’s only the best season ever.  No, not fall (which I do love) but a different kind of season.  Tis the season where large men don exoskeletons of protective pads, skin-tight spandex pants, thick plastic helmets and beat the living crap out of each other.

The season where I root for players on teams I’d normally rather throw hot garbage at, only to earn bragging rights among my friends for a week of standing victoriously in the winner’s circle of our fantasy league.  Smack talking never sounded so good.

The season where freezers are filled to the brim with an astronomical amount of chicken wings and refrigerators are packed to the gills with beer.  A time where it’s acceptable to start drinking at noon (“I’m sooo stressed about the game!”) and eating nothing but various types of grilled and fried meats is par for the course.  (Speaking of spandex pants…)

That’s right y’all.  It’s football season.  I will probably lose at least 50 twitter followers by the time it’s over due to my constant updates and slanderous Cowboys remarks, but that’s cool, it’s how I roll.  So in honor of my favorite season, I’ve decided that each week I will highlight a recipe that is a delicious alternative to the heavy wings and pizza that will no doubt surround you.  And which I might add, you should continue to enjoy, because, hey…  Let’s be honest.  Football is just more enjoyable when there’s wing sauce on your chin.

Garlic White Bean and Dill Dip

(Adapted from How Sweet It Is)
You’ll Need:
15oz can of cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
Large handful of fresh dill, stems removed
2 bulbs roasted garlic
4 T olive oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. ground cumin

Directions:  In a food processor or blender, combine beans, dill, garlic, salt, pepper and cumin, slowly adding olive oil.  Spoon into a medium bowl, drizzle with a little olive oil and garnish with a sprig of dill.

This has quickly become one of my new favorite party foods.  It’s very garlic-y, so if you like, you could probably just use one bulb.  I choose to enjoy as much garlic as possible at all times.  Some days I am surprised my husband actually kisses me…  But then I do make his coffee every morning and sometimes I’ll throw his wet clothes in the dryer for him, so I suppose it’s just another example of marital compromise.

Thankfully this was pretty much the perfect storm of an opening weekend in my opinion.  Eagles won, Cowboys lost and so did the Giants.

And on a quick serious note…

I just want to say… I love you guys.  Words cannot express how much all your kind words and outpouring of support means to me, and how much it truly helped me through what has been one of the hardest weekends I’ve ever had.
When I started blogging, I knew that there would be a million things I would love about it, but the people I’d meet… well, I just never imagined how many amazing new friends I’d get out of the deal.  So thank you times infinity with sugar on top.

Quick, change the subject before I get all weepy again…. Who’s your NFL team?
