As I mentioned in my “oh hey I’m still here please don’t forget about me” post last week, I’ve been fortunate to do quite a bit of traveling these last few months. I never thought that would be something I’d do in my professional life, but as it turns out, video production can happen anywhere and sometimes a girl’s gotta travel for it.
So despite my paralyzing fear of airplanes (which I’ve since overcome), I’ve been here and there and everywhere with quite a few more places to go. One of the places we recently visited was on my travel bucket list, and for good reason.
Ahh… Charleston, South Carolina. I’d heard amazing things about this place from family, friends and other bloggers, and knew it was a place I needed to visit. From the fantastic shopping and beautiful old buildings to the warm weather and amazing food, Charleston and I became fast friends.
They actually call it “The Holy City”, and it’s easy to see why after about 10 minutes of walking around. There are literally churches on every corner, this one in particular I thought was absolutely stunning.
And the food. MY GOD, THE FOOD! As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, Husk was my cannot visit here and not go dinner destination.
Husk is a rustic, farm-to-table style restaurant from James Beard award-winning chef, Sean Brock. The menu is based on local and fresh ingredients, and changes daily based on what is in season and locally available. The food is equally modern as it is southern, and definitely made it hard to choose when it came time to order.
Our server was very warm and welcoming, taking time to talk over the day’s menu and answer any questions we had. The appetizer list was enticing, but we decided to keep as southern as possible with our choices.
TN Cheddar Pimento Cheese with Grilled Bread, Pickled Ramps, Crispy Ham and Scallions
This was good, but not great. I thought I would have liked it more, based on my love of cheese alone, but I found the flavor a little bit underwhelming.
Kentuckyaki Pig’s Ear Lettuce Wraps with Salt “Fermented” Cucumbers and Peppers, Shaved Onion, Benne
Oh yes. I ate pig’s ears. And they were everything. Sort of like the love child of bacon and pork rinds. But better. Both the bartender and our server highly recommended these and I am so glad they did! Definitely not something I would have ordered on my own, but one of the most flavorful appetizers I’ve ever had.
Dinner was my absolute favorite, and I knew immediately what I was going to order.
Confit of Duck Leg with Roasted Parsnip, Butternut Squash, Brussels Sprouts Leaves and Smoked Celeriac, Brown Butter Jus
The duck was so moist and flavorful, I had to force myself to stop between bites just to savor it and actually breathe. I also really loved the pairing of butternut squash and brussels, something I’ve never thought to combine but have since replicated in my own kitchen.
Unfortunately no room was saved for dessert, but I was very much tempted to test my limits.
Also worth noting is the Bar at Husk, which we checked out prior to dinner. I would highly recommend stopping in here for a drink if you have time. They have an extensive bourbon selection, a few microbrews and some deliciously creative cocktails. They also use the “ice sphere” in their drinks which apparently keeps your libations colder and without getting watered down from the ice. Although I’m not one to let my ice melt, if you know what I mean. (My pick: Delicia de Noche, Tequila, orange liqueur, red pepper jam syrup, agave, topped with IPA, preserved lime.) Please and thank you.
In short, if you should find yourself in the beautiful little town of Charleston, I would highly recommend a visit to Husk. (Although make sure you make a reservation because I’ve heard it can be tough to get a table without one.)
