This weekend I spent some time at one of my absolute most favorite places in the entire world. It’s by no means fancy: there’s no tv (gasp!), the hot water only lasts about 60 seconds, and better yet, there’s hardly any cellphone reception. I’m talking about “the cabin”.
It’s a modest little abode, seated on a few acres of moss-covered land out in the middle of Nowheresville, and it.is.wonderful. I’ve been going every summer since I can remember (and for those I can’t, there is photographic evidence scattered throughout my parent’s house). I have fond memories of my Pop Pop Ralph, may he rest in peace, shouting at us kids for letting the screen door slam, sitting on the porch until the bats came out and laughing til our bellies hurt, and endless nights crammed 15 deep around a table meant for 10. It’s a quaint little space, but it’s perfect and I love it dearly. And since being nestled in the woods for a few days has left me in allergy Hell (a fair price to pay), and I’m too hopped up on Allegra to write anything that makes sense, I hope you will settle for a few snapshots from my weekend spent at one of the best places on Earth.

And because I have no shame and am not above bragging, here is a very blurry picture of me wearing a cabin staple (a Budweiser hat that is no doubt older than I am) and gloating after winning a death match of Apples to Apples. Also this was like my 28th glass of wine, so I can assure you that smile is not just because I won.

So there it is, my little slice of heaven.
Is there anywhere near and dear to your heart that you go to with family or friends every year?

Those pictures look so beautiful!

Thanks! They don’t even do it justice…

Your pictures look so peaceful. That could be the wine, but I think it’s really the environment
I don’t have one of those vacation places now, but growing up we had a 40-foot trailer up north that we went to for most of the summer weekends. Campfires, 4-wheeling, swimming, ice cream at the local parlor, throwing crap up in the air for the bats and tracking deer…While none of that appeals to me now–I hate camping–it was a fun tradition when I was little.

I went through a phase where I wasn’t that excited about going, but the older I get, the more I appreciate the little things…and care a little less about that fact that there are definitely spiders crawling over me in my sleep.

I swear my Dad had a Budweiser hat just like that back in the day! We get together with my parents and my sister’s family every year and take my Dad’s boat out to a little island and cook lobsters and clams on the beach and stay out there for the day. So much fun.

that sounds amazing, we need more clam bakes in our lives!

What a beautiful place!!

Great pictures…the filters really seem to suit the colors/composition of the different scenes. My family rarely went on vacation so I am sad to say there’s no special summer place in my life. We keep thinking we need to find somewhere that we want to go again and again but…the fact that we so rarely go on vacation makes that difficult. (I sense an unproductive pattern here!)

thanks
You should just start going random places until something sticks, at least that way you get to see new things and spend family time together in the meantime!

bahahahaa…. love the hat!
Glad it was a peaceful weekend. It’s always nice to have a quiet spot to go to for a few days to reset. Sadly, for me this mostly just means the suburbs. But whatev- I take what I can get!
July 23, 2012 at 7:41 pm
unfortunately my phone still gets a few bars of service, but for the most part, I felt pretty “unplugged”. And hey, the suburbs can be VERY peaceful!

That looks amazing. I always wished my family did something like that. We used to lake a lot, but we didn’t have a cabin or anything. And that hat makes me want you, more than usual.

ohhh girl, you like my cabin style *wink*

Those pictures are gorgeous, and it sounds like a pretty perfect weekend. I love getting away to places like that. I wish it was something I did more often.
July 23, 2012 at 7:42 pm
I agree, it is definitely not frequent enough.
July 23, 2012 at 12:43 pm
Ahhh trips like that are much needed and so appreciated. Love that!

What a beautiful place!! And honestly no tv, no phone signal + 28 glasses of vino sounds just perfect! I don’t really have anywhere like that… must get on it!! Glad you had such a fun time! I’l bet Mac LOVED it!! My two would have been in squirrel and bird chasing heaven! Haha!
July 24, 2012 at 8:29 am

While I remain staunchly in the “city girl” camp, there really is nothing like a few days in the middle of nowhere to recharge the ol’ batteries. Your pictures are fantastic- looks like a nice getaway! And you look smokin’ in that hat, by the way.
July 24, 2012 at 11:19 pm
Of course you look gorgeous wearing the hat from the 1970′s, of course you do.
The scenary is absolutely gorgeous and part of the reason why I prefer mountains over beach any day of the week. And it just makes me so happy to see that someone else reads actual books still instead of them on a Kindle.

Those pictures are absolutely beautiful! Everything looks so peaceful, and relaxing. We used to go up to my family cabin in Squaw Valley all the time (sadly it doesn’t happen often anymore, may need to plan a trip though). We also had no tv & would just go hiking, out to the lake & play games, your pics are making me miss those days so much!
