Things to Peep on the Cheap

One of the reasons I consider myself “stealthy” per se, is that I am always on the look out for less-expensive but still good quality beauty products.  And in light of my most recent Birchbox (click here to find out more), I was inspired to share a few of the “cheap” items I’ve worked into my routine the last few months that have not only saved me some serious cash money (I know, I’m so gangster) but that I am absolutely loving.  Yes, that’s right.  Loving.

So just to preface this, here’s my most recent Birchbox:

(PS- I always write “bitch-box” first, which I think is pretty hilarious.)  Anyways, as you can see, it was decent.  The theme was Gossip Girl (which admittedly I’ve stopped watching… I know…) but I love the “xoxo” cards and I squealed a little when I saw the stila eyeliner box.  Other items included: face cream, face wash, and a delicious smelling perfume.  So as I anxiously unwrapped my sparkly new stila eyeliner, fumbling the tube and getting brown glitter all over my hands as well as in my actual eye, I realized something.  I suck at eyeliner.  For someone who has been makeup obsessed for about 25 years, I can still hardly draw a straight line over my eyelid.  Until this came along:

Elf liquid eyeliner pen.  And only $1 at Target, my friends.  It glides on with the greatest of ease and it lasts, like, all day.  I don’t know what it is about this little beaut’ but she is amazing.  I will never ever use another brand.  (I got mine in black, fyi).

Ok, next up, my new favorite shampoo and conditioner.  Now this is always a touchy subject, because for the longest time, I’ve been a pretty big hair product snob.  After years of abuse, my poor damaged locks have seen better days, and it used to be only the priciest of hair elixirs that I’d allow to grace my crown.  But I kept hearing that the Suave Professionals line was worth trying.  So I figured for like $3 a bottle, what did I have to lose?  (Keep in mind, I’ve been spending around $15-$20 a bottle for shampoo/conditioner for at least the last 5 or so years).

I went with the Suave Professionals Humectant Moisture*, and y’all, this stuff is legit.  I use it every day (that I wash my hair…), it smells heavenly, and it makes my hair super silky without weighing it down.  I will probably still go back and forth between this and the “good stuff”  (they say you shouldn’t use the same shampoo/conditioner ever single day) but I cannot say enough good things.

Lastly is something that not only I enjoy, but a little four-legged friend by the name of Mac is also a fan.

St. Ives Naturally Indulgent body lotion, in Coconut Milk and Orchid Extract*.  Do you know what happiness smells like?  This.  This is what happiness smells like.  And I think it’s priced around $5.  It’s the perfect consistency (I can’t stand when lotion is too watery or too thick) and it makes my skin feel nice and soft.
The funny thing about this stuff is that for some reason, Mac is ob.sessed with it.  When I get ready in the mornings, he knows exactly when in my routine that I put lotion on my arms and legs, and runs in like I just laid out a filet, trying his best to lick every drop from my calves.  I have to run away and shout at him to stop, Brandon things we’re both weird, and I end up running into doors, tripping over shoes and knocking over curling irons because of it.  Yes I realize I could just lock the bathroom door, but hey, I like to get in some QT with  my main man before the day begins.

So there you have it, 3 wallet-friendly beauty products that are Stealth-approved for your pampering pleasure!

  1. elf has been life changing. I really love that I can buy basics like eye shadow for a buck. Especially when I was paying $7-8 for it previously.

I go back and forth with shampoo, too. I really do love the basic Herbal Essences, but still switch in Paul Mitchell every once in a while. Can’t help but LOVE the smell of it…

  2. Perfect timing! I need to go and get shampoo today. I think I’ll be trying this one.

  3. i looove that shampoo too! i was shocked at how much I love it because I also like to get the good stuff. i just recently got the smooth& sleek version and it’s just as good! i’m def gonna try that eyeliner. e.l.f. is hit or miss but has some awesome hits

  4. i bought elf for the first time 6 years ago – since everything was $1 i bought about 75 things…makes sense, right? is everything still $1??

  5. Ooh, I’m going to have to try out that shampoo. And I love my Neutrogena bronzer – you can’t tell it’s only $8 (versus $35 for the pricier brands). And I really love the Ulta brand eyeliner (the retractable kind). Great post, Jess!

  6. UGH, I’m so mad I didn’t renew my birthday birchbox gift now. I neeed, need to go grab that liquid liner.

  7. I really hope my Birch Box comes to me and not to the building next door. I’m so over that.
I need to try to Suave. I’m cheap when it comes to shampoo and conditioner so I usually use Pantene. I could use a change!

  8. I’m a big fan of the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners. They go on so easily and stay all day long. Plus they come in fun colors. Too funny about Mac and the lotion.

  9. You got wayyyyyyy cooler stuff in your Birchbox. I got a BB cream, gold nail polish (which I’ll use during Steeler season only), tiny shampoo and eye cream.

  10. I stalk Marshalls for giant bottles of fancy shampoos that usually run under $8. They last months and I get to try the fancier brands without blowing my budget. I’ve also been a fan of ELF for years, they really are good products for the price!

  11. I’ve never heard of Elf! I am totally going to check out that eyeliner. I spend way too much money on eyeliner because I can never find a good one. The shampoo sounds great too. I must check that out as well. Thanks for the tips. :) I love saving money on beauty necessities.

  12. Well, now you’ve just given me an excuse to go down to the States and hit up Target. I want $1 eyeliner. We don’t really have cheap anything here, we get pretty ripped off around here. I mean seriously, I can buy CANADIAN cheese for less if I go to the States for it. WTF is that about?

  13. Good to know about the Suave. My hair is helluva dry since moving to Colorado and I have coupons–score!!

  14. I’m a big fan of St Ives…I have been using Garnier Beauty Balm for the last few weeks…moisturizer, foundation, sunscreen, etc all in one. Loving how quick & easy it is.

  15. I got that eyeliner in my Birchbox too!!! It’s the first liquid liner I’ve used, and I like it a lot!

  16. ELF eye primer, love it. But I have no clue what a birchbox is…I feel silly.

  17. I love elf cosmetics. I use their liquid eyeliner, bronzer, eye primer and a few of their brushes. Fabulous stuff!

  18. Bahaha, your dog has fancy taste. I hesitate to tell you this since I know you don’t live close to one, but I found this hand cream at Trader Joe’s for $1.99 that is AMAZING. I’m slightly obsessed. That should come as no surprise considering my obsession with all TJ’s things.

  19. I love that St Ives lotion – use it on the reg! Fave cheap beauty find right now are the Yes to Blueberries face wipes w/ moisturizer. Amazing in place of washing your face when in a rush/lazy/”tired”/ya know. LOVE! oh yea, they’re like 2.99 too. win!
