Living Social Nightmare

Hi friends, happy Monday!   I can’t believe in 2 weeks I’ll be driving to work in the complete opposite direction… For those of you who don’t know, I’ve accepted a position with a new company and I am more than a little excited about the opportunity.  It will be sad to leave a place I’ve been for over 5 years, but I think this is the right move for me right now and I’m anxious to get started!

So I have to tell you all that I had quite the dining experience this weekend. My parents met Brandon and I for dinner, to celebrate Brandon’s birthday, at a local restaurant, where my mother and I had both purchased Living Social coupons recently.  Even though the coupon says “one per table”, other restaurants have always been really cool about honoring them as long as we just split the check.  This time, however, not so much.  (I will say that the experience was already kind of tarnished when I told the owner that my meal was extremely salty, and he proceeded to tell me that no, in fact, it wasn’t.  He did bring us a free dessert, but was kind of a jerk about it and said “well I hope this isn’t too sweet for you!”  Ok then.)  So when it came time to pay the bill, we asked for separate checks and proceeded to turn in our respective coupons.  Next thing we know, the owner is back at the table, telling us how this was the worst mistake he’s ever made, that he makes no money off the deal, and how if let’s us both use our coupons, he’d have to let everyone else do the same and he’d be out of business in a year.  This went on for no less than 10 minutes.  Seriously.

First of all… calm the f down.  We just enjoyed a nice meal, and what we don’t need right now is someone speaking to us in a unpleasant tone in front of a dining room full of patrons who have all now stopped eating their dinners and are staring in horror.  Second of all, that’s fine!  All he had to say was “sorry, one per table” and I wouldn’t have batted an eyelash.  You’d think it would have ended there, but no less than 5 minutes later, he was back with a coupon he’d already received from another table, spouting off about how it says on the bottom “one per table” at which point I looked at him and said, “Ok, I understand.  We aren’t arguing with you.  Honestly, I don’t even want to hear about it anymore.”  Which is totally out of character for me, I never speak up in situations like this, but seriously.  Enough.

But it wasn’t enough.  5 minutes later I hear, “BABY.  BABY.”  Assuming I’m baby, I turn around, and there he is, fanning an entire BOX of other Living Social coupons he’s received that month in my general direction, and yet again screaming, “I make no money!”  We lost it.  It was a bad Curb Your Enthusiam episode.  We all burst into laughter, and could not hold it together.  Finally we got to leave and if my Living Social coupon had been on a piece of paper and not my phone, I honestly would have thrown it in the trash.  It was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant ever.  Ever.

The whole weekend wasn’t so bad, thankfully.  Before the Living Social Nightmare occurred, I got to see the Hunger Games, which was freaking awesome.  (Especially the part when the kid in front of us came back from the bathroom and face-planted into his chair.  HI-larious.)

I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone, so I will just say that I really really really liked it.  I want to go back and see it again.  Like now.  Bravo.

Sunday was also a pretty sweet day, I did a little shopping with the biff at T.J. Maxx and Target (my two favorite places in the whole world) and had an awesome little lunch at an adorable little Thai restaurant, Bangkok Wok.

Bangkok Wok on Urbanspoon

We both got our own appetizers, I got the summer rolls (with steamed chicken and shrimp) which were fab.  (Mary got the fried spring rolls, which she thought were “ok”.  PS sorry for the crappy iPhone pictures.)

And then we split the  salmon with a red curry peanut sauce.  Which we couldn’t even finish.  Between two of us, two women with remarkably large appetites.

This was fantastic.  The curry was the perfect amount of spice and just the right amount of coconut milk.  The salmon was cooked beautifully and the option of brown rice will always earn extra points with me.  Most notably, the staff here is truly amazing.  They were helpful and pleasant, and stopped by the table just enough.  They made us feel very welcome, which is great for first-time patrons, and we both agreed we’d definitely go back.

Especially if they offer a Living Social coupon.

So what’s the deal?  Have you guys ever gotten negative feedback when you used Groupons or Living Social deals?  Apparently my mom had an awful experience at a spa when she used one to get a facial and they were really rude about it.  I think I might just stop buying them altogether.

  1. What the hell? I never eat out so I’ve never done the Living Social thing, but that would do it for me. Actually, I don’t know that I would blame it on the deal as much as the douchebag owner. That’s completely unprofessional, and just because he made a bad business decision doesn’t mean he can take it out on anyone else. I hope you wrote a SCATHING review somewhere about it (other than here.)

And the only Hunger Games I’m familiar with are if they involve snacks and sports, so I’m out on that one, too. Oh! And congrats again on the job ;)

  2. What a douche!
It’s like the time the restaurant lost my coat in coat check (a huge fiasco for everyone there that night) and wouldn’t compensate me for it. “If I gave you money for it, I’d have to pay back everyone who lost their coat in coat check that night.”
Uh. Yeah. Wouldn’t that sort of make sense?

  3. I NEED to see that movie. My initial plan was avoid the teenybopper rush but now this weekend seems years away.

  4. Thats always my fear about using one of the living social/groupon coupons..one of the restaurants being a totally jerk about it. Theres just no need for it. I’m still spending money in your restaurant.

I would of LOVED to see that kid fall into his seat. When I went to see it yesterday (loved it) our movie stopped with 30 mins to go and it took another 10 mins for them to start it again. At least we got free movie tickets out of it.

Good Luck with the new job!

  5. I may or may not have seen The Hunger Games on Saturday AND Sunday. It was just THAT good, and I feel like there’s so much going on – same as in the books – that you’re really able to pick up on all the little nuances by seeing it twice. So agreed with you on how awesome it was.

    Congratulations on the new job!!

  6. Congrats on the new job!
I have nothing but great experiences with the Groupon deals I have purchased {knock on wood]!

  7. Jesus Christ! I’m glad you said something. The last thing I want in a restaurant is a waiter (or owner, gah, even worse!) whining about his problems. And I was a bad waitress so I know it’s not asking too much. Nut up, dude.

  8. Congrats on the new job, Jess! Awesome news!

And I’ve never experienced anything like that before, not when using a coupon at least. The thing I don’t get is why he had to be SO rude about it. He could’ve explained the situation in a much different way and still have achieved the same outcome. I really don’t get people sometimes! At least the rest of your weekend made up for it!

  9. Congrats on the job! I’ve never used Living Social or any of those deals before, but I don’t think I would have been able to hold back, even with how tight-lipped I usually am (especially in stressful situations). What a moron.

  10. [Argh, I just wrote a long comment and WordPress erased it because I wasn't logged in. I hate this new comment system!]

Anyway. Yeah, I had a horrible LS experience too. I unsubscribed after that.

  11. I would have told the dude to suck a dick, seriously. Sorry you had a bad experience! I also loved The Hunger Games, I think I’m going to take Darren to see it next month when he’s here. Assuming it’s still in theaters.

  12. oh my heavens, that sounds nutso.

I’ve actually had TWO bad experiences using Living Social coupons… wait, no. I mean not being able to use Living Social coupons. two separate times, I’ve tried to use a coupon not long after purchasing only to find the establishment was closed. once it happened with a restaurant, once with a salon.

I’ll be sticking to Groupon from now on. I’ve never had a problem there.

  13. that’s crazy?! i’ve used both groupon and living social a few times and never once had a negative experience?! my good friend is a business owner and loves using them, brings in so much business for her. and the owners approach livsoc/groupon i thought most of the time, not vice versa, so they’ve chosen to put themselves into that situation right? that was SO beyond inappropriate what that restaurant owner did to you guys and so sorry you had such a terrible experience!! on a good note, those summer rolls look fab, perfect warm weather food ;)

  14. Well that kind of behavior is just inexcusable. At that rate, he WILL be out of business in a year. You know, Groupon is headquartered in Chicago and I have a bunch of friends who work for them and they’ve told me that, yeah, group deals can actually really hurt a merchant (especially in larger cities where there are so many options b/c the deals don’t garner repeat customers), but that is so beyond unprofessional. Not the customers fault you made a bad choice! Also, HUNGER GAMES. YES. It was so good!

  15. Congrats on the new job! Oh, my gosh, that experience sounds absolutely awful!!! I’m sorry that you were treated that way! I hope you and your family still managed to have a good dinner despite all of that. Seriously, I don’t understand what is wrong with restaurants these days.

I’m dying to finish reading the Hunger Games so I can see the movie. My goal is to see the movie this weekend :)

  16. Seriously? That guy is going to go out of business because he’s a tool, not because of coupons. What a freakshow.

  17. That’s crazy! I mean, wow. You know how I feel about it.
I’ve often felt that I get worse service when using a group deal, but never had that terrible of an experience. I’ve been using a different site that has you make the reservation in advance and they just take a percentage off your total bill. I like that a lot better because we never even have to discuss it with the wait staff and we tip on the full amount so all parties are happy!

  18. Congrats on the job! :)

I had a similarly bad experience and enjoyed posting it. I’m curious where this was since we live kind of near each other! :)

    • Yeah, I struggled with whether or not to post the name of the place, but decided against it. I mean, I guess I’m just giving this guy the benefit of the doubt that on most days he’s actually a decent human being and we were just the straw that broke the camel’s back. Plus it’s a really small place and I just feel bad for any small business right now, even if they are total jerks.

  19. That is why I never buy Groupons or any of those coupons anymore. They’re always to horrible places!! I’ve never had a good experience at a place I’ve bought a groupon thing for. I guess there’s a good reason they have to pay people to come eat at their restaurant…they suck!

  20. I’ve never had a bad experience using Groupon or LivingSocial. I tend to buy them for places I’m already familiar with. The only strange experience I had was seeing a couple — probably not on a first date — arguing with the server about the coupon. It was really awkward especially when the guy said he didn’t want the food and wouldn’t pay for it if they couldn’t use the coupon. The woman immediately, said “no, it’s okay, we’ll pay.” You could tell she was mortified. That table got really quiet after the guy said that.

I’m pretty sure my fiancé and I had the same deal and had no trouble using it.

Hope the transition to the new job is smooth!

  21. Wow I can’t believe someone who owns a restaurant would behave that way especially in front of other customers…that’s quite an awkward situation. I’m so excited for Hunger Games this weekend could not come fast enough!!

  22. Oh my gosh, that is SO horrible!!!! Sometimes those living social deals aren’t so great, because they treat you like crap when they know you have one.

However, my boyfriend and I used one on Sunday, at a pizza place, and it was fantastic! It was such a great deal, and they were super nice about it.

  23. omg what a freak! I don’t think I would have been able to hold my tongue so much! lol

  24. I’ve had good and not so good experiences using those deals. Sometimes they are psyched that you learned of their restaurant and sometimes I think they get pissy knowing they won’t be bringing in as much money as expected from your table that night. I typically only buy them from places I already know I like or have heard are good. One thing I DO know is that both groupon and living social have pretty good customer service so I wouldn’t hesitate to write to living social and let them know that you had poor service. They might refund you! Also, if a deal is expired (at least in the state of Massachusetts) the establishment still has to honor the amount you paid – and if they close, the deal site has to refund you.

  25. If it makes you feel better, I’ll tell you about the time I had to be chased down by our waiter because I assumed the tip (which it says on the menu will be included for parties more than 6 people) was included and didn’t leave one… And then I had to stand in front the entire restaurant and calculate the tip in my head. EMBARRASSING. Although your experience sounds awful as well…

I’m glad you enjoyed the Hunger Games! I enjoyed it too, twice. :)

  26. YES – It wasn’t Living Social, but another one of those deals and when we brought it out at the end of the meal the owner proceeded to give us the same speech about how they make no money on them, etc, etc. Just unnecessarily embarassing and makes you not want to go back! If they are such a problem for them, they shouldn’t offer them!

  27. I’ve been relatively lucky with Groupons and the like (knock on wood), but I’m always fearful about these instances. How is it YOUR fault they chose to participate on Living Social? And congrats on the new job!
