Growing up as a young girl, there were few things I was certain of.
- The more Barbies you had, the more popular you were. (And if you had the Dream House? Well then tiny plastic pink hats off to you, my friend.)
- The mall was the place where all your dreams came true. And just because you reaaaally want something “OMYGOSH I’ll DIE if I don’t get it!” it doesn’t mean it’s meant to be. And…
- I. Liked. Boys.
Like a lot. I was boy crazy as far back as I can remember. I could probably even pin point my crushes from Kindergarten all the way through college, of course ending with my dear husband, who clearly saw the light when he decided to invest in this property.
But despite how many of these boys ever pulled my hair, or pushed me at recess, or never even knew I existed, there were a few faces throughout my young adult life of whom captured my heart each and every week via the warm glow of my television. I present to you:
My top 3 teenage heart-throbs (in no particular order):
1. No-Brainer.
Ah, Zack Morris. (As my friend Casey says: He is everything.) I felt as though each and every one of his on-screen soliloquies was specifically for me. From his constantly failing schemes to his perfectly coiffed blonde hair, he had my heart in his hands. And not just pre-pubescent Zack, I followed that angel face all the way to the College Years. And anyone who thinks I’m joking, well obviously you don’t understand my commitment to both true love and television series that jump the shark.
Also… you should know that when I was about 9 years old I wrote him a fan letter and drew a “very accurate” photo of myself. Strangely enough I never got anything back… It’s cool MPG. I know you got it.
2. The boy next door’s best friend:
Dawson’s Creek’s own Pacey Witter. Poor, forgotten Pacey. Despite his Mary Kay Letourneau-esq romp with his high school teacher and his less than stable rollercoaster romance with Andie (who he was way too good for by the way), there was something about his goofy character that just entranced me. While most of the girls pined for the sensitive, angsty Dawson Leary, I was a Pacey girl, through and through. And in that last episode where he and Joey realize they still love each other, a part of me died, knowing I would never be the girl sitting on the dock dangling my feet in the cool waters below and staring into his big blue puppy dog eyes. I don’t wanna’ wait…
And last, but certainly not least…
3. The holy grail:

Ben. Covington. (via Felicity)
I feel like instead of words, we should just take a moment to really take in the ultimate sultry perfection above. Bad boy, lost soul, sexual white chocolate. As if there could be a more ideal man in the television universe. The minute Felicity decided to follow this man to New York, I got it.
I’m pretty sure they cast him as part of the swim team solely for my own personal enjoyment.
(In case you’re not aware, I am a huge Felicity fan. I’m confident in saying not only is it my favorite TV show to date (of which I own the entire series and break out and re-watch at least once a year), but I feel like in a lot of ways I was Felicity. But I’ll save that for another day/post.)
Alrighty, then.
Now that I’ve completely lost my train of thought, and have turned my focus to all things Scott Speedman, I leave you with this question:
Who was your TV crush? Mike Seaver? Ryder Strong? Devon Sawa? (I may have been a Tiger Beat collector…ahem.)

I was obnoxiously obsessed with JTT. LOVED him. You have no idea how devastated I was when he left Home Improvement… ugh!
October 4, 2011 at 11:55 am
There’s still a void in my heart from the end of the JTT era. COME BACK!
October 4, 2011 at 2:04 pm
I just saw a picture of him now the other day and he’s still got those boyish good looks… plus an extra 20lbs, but he’d still get it.
October 4, 2011 at 6:03 pm
MEEE TOOOOOOO!!!! Oh I hearted him for sure. I may/may not still watch reruns of home improvement at 7 am on TBS.
October 4, 2011 at 7:17 am
Here’s where I fly my freak flag, as I am the complete opposite of you with your top three points (except I did have the Barbie house, but chopped off the hair of all my dolls.) Anyway, I don’t even know who Ben Covington is, and when I was little, I had a huge thing for older action stars–Sly Stallone, Arnold, Bruce Willis. Sure I had a crush on the middle brother from the Hogan Family or the older brother on Boy Meets World, but at my core, I liked the older men.
October 4, 2011 at 7:34 am
Um is it weird i had no idea who ben covington was and then started to drool?
i was so obsessed with jtt i tried becoming a vegetarian when i was 8.
October 4, 2011 at 7:58 am
Mmm, nope, Dawson for me all the way! Oh, and Milo Ventimiglia who played Jess on Gilmore Girls…and probably a thousand others that I can’t think of right now (I was totally the boy-crazy kiddo too!)
October 4, 2011 at 8:37 am
yes! I loved Jess…his little lether jacket.. Good one.
October 4, 2011 at 8:30 am
Pacey is my ideal man and always will be
JJ was my first crush and I still heart him today!
October 4, 2011 at 8:46 am
I’ve never seen Felicity or Dawson’s Creek… Anyway, I guess my most prominent teenage crush (that I remember) was Ryan Reynolds. And he’s only gotten hotter.
October 4, 2011 at 8:47 am
Wait! I was also madly in love with the lead singer of 311, Nick Hexum. I was thinking TV/movies and forgot musical crushes.
October 4, 2011 at 2:03 pm
I was more of a Brad Nowell from Sublime kind of girl but I see where you’re going with that.
October 4, 2011 at 8:50 am
omg Devon Sawa!!! I completely forgot about him!! I looooooved him. Casper!! I watched Now and Then a million times and wished that could be me on that porch swing with him.
October 4, 2011 at 2:02 pm
I know, swoon.
October 4, 2011 at 8:53 am
you.complete.me.
October 4, 2011 at 2:02 pm
and you I.
October 4, 2011 at 9:35 am
I do not have the foggiest idea who these little pipsqueaks are, although the names of the shows are familiar. The problem with teenage crushes is that you grow up and realize THEY ALL LOOKED LIKE GIRLS. I loved Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran – the man wore glossier pink lip gloss and sparklier blue eyeliner than I did.
October 4, 2011 at 2:02 pm
Yes. Like Taylor Hansen. Such a pretty little boy.
October 4, 2011 at 9:38 am
Pacey all the way! I adored him.
Dawson was way too needy and annoyed me to no end.
October 4, 2011 at 9:40 am
Yo, it’s Witter, get it right. And as someone who thought they were Joey Potter, we had more than one matching sweater, Pacey is my love. And Devon Sawa, Now and Then? Yes please.
October 4, 2011 at 9:59 am
Dude, I kept typing Witter and then questioning myself. Once again, age is taking over my body… what year is it again?
October 4, 2011 at 2:01 pm
I can totally see you as Joey. (Up until about a year ago, I still hated on Michelle Williams for swooping in and f*cking up her flow).
October 4, 2011 at 9:57 am
oh Pacey
i LOVED him!
October 4, 2011 at 10:02 am
Ok – I love you so much for drawing a picture of yourself to include in that letter. That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard.
I don’t think I really had any celebrity crushes when I was younger. In high school it was definitely Jess from Gilmore Girls – ok – let’s be honest – I’d still do him. Before that though I never considered anyone famous. I was probably too practical or something equally boring.
October 4, 2011 at 10:15 am
Definitely Ben Convington! He was so yum!
October 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm
The epitome of yum.
October 4, 2011 at 10:27 am
hahaha. I love you for this.
I’ve professed my love for Jesse McCartney many times. and clearly, in that same respect, Zach Morris fits the (my) bill. Your friend is so right. He is everything.
sigh.
October 4, 2011 at 10:30 am
I was madly in love with Zack Morris! I actually met him in person when I was really young. I gave him a stuffed animal and every single possible way to get in touch with me. Sadly he never called.
I also had a run in with Ryder Strong. He is an ass! I was at a taping for the dress rehearsal of SNL and he was sitting behind me with his..boyfriend! He was immature and such an ass. He was laughing so obnoxiously the entire time and kicking our seats. At the end he pushed people out of the way so him and his bf could leave before everyone else. Totally changed my opinion of him for sure.
October 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm
This just made my whole life. So jealous you met Zack Attack.
And Ryder is GAY?! OH MAN!
October 4, 2011 at 11:09 am
OMGucci. Scott Speedman is STILL the foxiest man I have ever laid eyes on. He was the main reason I watched that show! Seriously, I need to take a minute here…
October 4, 2011 at 1:59 pm
I know, girl. I. Know.
October 4, 2011 at 11:50 am
I definitely had Ryder Strong and Devon Sawa stages, but my one and only was always Jonathan Taylor Thomas. I was weak in the knees for him and had a poster pyramid of him on my slanted attic wall in my room. Oh yes, we were serious. I recorded Home Improvement of tape every day and watched it over and over. Sigh…
I think I need to watch Felicity. I never got past the first season I don’t think. I didn’t make it all the way through Dawson’s Creek either. I wonder why? I can’t remember now why I stopped. It certainly wasn’t because I had “better taste” than that. Mystery of mysteries…
Oh, and I AM Meredith Grey, which is lame, but I’m cool with it.
October 4, 2011 at 1:59 pm
I sort of feel like I’d be Izzy, minus the whole talking to ghosts thing, so at least we could be roomies! WIN!
And JTT all the way. I remember he did a cruise (similar to the much-coveted Weezer cruise) that a friend of mine was convinced if she got to go on, she’d win him over for life. Yeah, didn’t happen…
October 4, 2011 at 1:58 pm
Ricky Shroeder and Kirk Cameron were the first true loves of my love. Followed by NKOTB… who, may I mention, I still lust over in a much more “grown up” way
October 4, 2011 at 2:05 pm
You should know I also wrote a letter to Joey McIntyre. (Maybe twice)
October 4, 2011 at 4:39 pm
I love Scott Speedman! I was always team Pacey, but I also remember having a slight crush on Dawson’s dad.. Ahh teenage crushes too funny!
October 4, 2011 at 4:44 pm
Joshua Jackson was the end-all-be-all for me in high school…And still currently. The first posters to grace my preteen walls though were of NKOTB and Jonathan Brandis (I can’t believe I just admitted to the last one). SeaQuest anyone? Anyone?
October 4, 2011 at 4:50 pm
Oh just showing my age here. Jeremy Jordan! Yes. He can give me the right kind of love all night long.
October 4, 2011 at 6:09 pm
Zach Morris was, and will forever be, numero uno.
That being said, I had my fair share of BB pull outs (BIG bopper, you) of JTT, Devon Sawa, Leo, and I want to say his name was Jonathon Brandis? Is that the one who killed himself? He was on seaquest and he talked to dolphins so clearly a catch.
Fact: My cousin and I would get “fan” addresses out of the back of those godawful magazines and write letters.
Fact #2: I had the dream house. The four floor style with the elevator. So naturally I assumed all houses looked like that. When I make my first million (or marry my first millionaire), I’m bulding one.
October 4, 2011 at 9:58 pm
Love love love Ben from Felecity! He was way better than Noel.
October 5, 2011 at 8:24 am
Ryder Strong was definitely up there, but I was a HUGE JTT fan! This whole post brings me back!
October 6, 2011 at 8:13 am
Lol I love this post, I was SO boy crazy from the time I was young. I’m completely with you on those three men… I also loved JTT and whoever else was featured in Teen Beat.
