Day one of the detox and I’m goin’ strong. (Yeah that’s right. I’m proud of 1 day.) But I have to say, I found some comfort in hearing from you guys that you were feeling the same way. Not that I find joy in others misery (ok sometimes I laugh when people fall, but only if they’re not hurt…badly), but I think that in instances like this, it’s easier to stay strong with support of others. So in saying that, I hope that (if you are interested) you will join me in my 2 week ban of all things alcoholic and my quest to eat healthier. Come on in…the waters fine. *wink*
One of my favorite things to eat when I’m trying to cut back is not only great because it’s a salad (hooray for veggies!)…
but it also calls for spicy ground turkey (or beef, or Boca crumbles, pick your poison) piled high, and all the better for filling your belly.
Oh and have you met my new friend? She’s a staple in the SSH fridge and she could be your friend too:
DEE licious. I put this on burgers, salads, sandwiches, a spoon….you name it. My mom enlightened me to this little number and for that I thank her. Oh and for life, that’s pretty awesome too.
Taco salads are one of those perfect summer dinners that you can throw together with minimal cook time, and really tweak it to your liking. I supplied soft taco wraps for Brandon since he is “too good” for salads for dinner, and requires “man food”. I like to use “quotes” when I talk about things my “husband” “tells me.” I like them because they make everything seem like it’s “alleged”, and I “may” or “may not” be exaggerating…. ok I’m done now.
*Quick disclaimer: This may be one of those recipes I don’t necessarily need to instruct you on, but I’m merely sharing the way I prepare my taco salads, which I find to be quite fantastical.
Slimmed-Down Taco Salad
You’ll Need:
Bag of mixed lettuce
1/2 a yellow onion, diced
handful of black olives, sliced
1 lb. ground turkey, lean
1 packet taco seasoning
15 oz can black beans, rinsed and drained
15 oz can sweet corn, rinsed and drained
Fat free Greek yogurt, or light sour cream
Salsa
Wholly Guacamole
Directions: Brown turkey over med-high heat, and drain. Add taco seasoning and 3/4 cups water. Simmer until all liquid is absorbed, then remove from heat and set aside to cool. Spoon taco meat over a bed of greens and cover with beans, corn, onion and black olives. Add a heaping scoop of salsa, guacamole and Greek yogurt and mix. (I don’t even use dressing when I made/eat taco salads because I think once you mix the salsa and sour cream, you don’t even need it.)
Not really sure what’s on the menu for the rest of the week, but I’m fairly certain it will be lots more veggies, salads and lean protein. And sadly no crisp adult beverages to wash it down… Sigh. I did finally get back into my workout groove this week already though, so the good news is I survived…the bad news is I may need to be transported in a wheel chair tomorrow. It’s a waiting game.
Two questions today:
So who’s comin’ with me? Anyone else want to jump in on the 2-week-detox?
What’s your go-to meal when you’re trying to eat healthier? (Feel free to post links!)

I heart taco salad. Or basically the main components of mexican food- I’ll eat them any which way they are served.
I’m hitting up serious veggies all week. That’s my way of cleaning myself out. Literally…
August 9, 2011 at 2:31 pm
me too. Veggies FTW.

I hate to say it, but I pretty much already do what your detoxing from and am actually trying to add in more crap, but I’m with you in spirit! (But not “spirits,” technically speaking, seeing as it is an alcohol-free zone for a couple weeks.)
My go-to meals are big brown rice bowls with chickpeas, veggies, spices and butter. So easy, so versatile, so good.
August 9, 2011 at 2:31 pm
hey, I wish I ate like that all the time, so go ‘head with your healthy self

I will join you in the healthy eating part, but the booze will not be totally cut. I’m planning to test some concoction this Saturday that I’ve been brainstorming, but I will hold off on booze until then.
When I’m trying to eat better, I like to whip out some salads as well and make lots of steamed and roasted veggie-based meals.

Taco salads are my fav!!
August 9, 2011 at 11:24 am
I’m obsessed with those guac packets AND lighter versions of things!
August 9, 2011 at 2:32 pm
I wanted to get the spicy kind but they were all out
August 9, 2011 at 11:28 am
Aaand, this is what I want for dinner. Wanna come over? I promise not to drink more than 4-5 six packs in front of you.
August 9, 2011 at 2:33 pm
I think I’d actually enjoy that, as I assume you’d be quite entertaining should those events occur… plus I’ll go anywhere there’s taco salad.
August 9, 2011 at 11:35 am
I will join you – buuuuutttt not with the alcohol ban. Just eating healthier, I really need to keep my hand out of the office candy bowl. That thing is killing me.
I will however go the rest of this week without wine (unless my mom offers me hers) because I ran out, and I only shop on weekends.
August 9, 2011 at 2:33 pm
haha damn those candy bowls! I get too grossed out by them though because I always see questionable hands all up in there, swirling around, hunting for their favorite color… vom.
And you join me in whichever version you like

When I first saw that you were going on a cleanse, I thought you meant one of those juice cleanses! And then I realized what you were talking about, and I relaxed. Ha! I think it’s a great idea to “detox” after a period of not so healthy eating. I tend to stick to fruits, salads, and veggie protein (tofu, beans, PB, Greek yogurt, etc.).
August 9, 2011 at 2:35 pm
oh God no, I’d pass out on my way out the door in the morning if I did one of those. I might need to revisit my tofu skills…
August 9, 2011 at 12:01 pm
Ummmm. I’m semi detoxing with you. Is that cool? I mean… I’m not drinking tonight, and probably not Friday night. And Sundays are usually booze free. That’s a start. And I’m not eating sweets. So… yeah. Semi.
August 9, 2011 at 2:37 pm
I’d say that totally counts. Also I semi-love you so you do whatever you want.
August 9, 2011 at 12:06 pm
I eat mexican at least twice a week, including variations like this. I’m always in the mood for anything that includes guacamole and salsa. Can you throw that in a box and mail it to MD? suddenly my turkey sandwich doesn’t look so good anymore.
August 9, 2011 at 2:37 pm
haha I know, I always get re-hungry when I post the next day about my dinners and then stare at my measly soup/salad lunches. Well..usually.
August 9, 2011 at 2:21 pm
you should make “stuffed peppers”! they are super easy, you stuff them with whatever you want and they make good lunches the next day!
August 9, 2011 at 2:38 pm
mmmmm stuffed peppers…… perhaps I shall… I have more ground turkey that I need to use. Thanks lova
August 9, 2011 at 3:01 pm
I usually steam frozen mixed vegetables, throw in some chicken and marinara sauce and try to tell myself it’s pasta. I’ll try your salad.
August 9, 2011 at 4:59 pm
I suck at tricking myself with food. I just get sad when I realize it’s all lies…
August 9, 2011 at 9:14 pm
Jess! Is that a new pic up there? love it, love it.
I need to do a detox…but 2 weeks without alcohol. cmon mannnn
August 9, 2011 at 9:26 pm
why yes it is and thank you
And I KNOW. It’s going to be a long two weeks. Ughh.
August 9, 2011 at 11:52 pm
Wait you are requesting I give up my wine?!?!?! How will I ever make it through Monday’s Bachelor Pad with out it!?!?!?
August 10, 2011 at 9:13 am
I would like to shrink myself and dive into that taco salad. But that is a given, yes?
August 10, 2011 at 11:05 am
My go to is miso soup, with ribbons of zucchinni for noodles and skinless salmon poached in it. Though my “husband” doesn’t think it’s “real food” so I usually eat it for lunch when he’s gone. I’ll join on the health- I’ve got to be a brideslave in a couple of weeks, but I’m not giving up my glass of wine with dinner…. (nb, just found your blog and am a little bit smitten…)
August 10, 2011 at 6:15 pm
haha “brideslave” is awesome! I’ve never heard that before
Glad you found me & welcome!
